Accessibility Statement

Last updated: October 2, 2026

HIGSI Disability Network is a community-led organization founded by persons with disabilities. Accessibility is at the heart of who we are, and we are committed to ensuring that our website, higsi.org, is accessible to everyone, including people who use assistive technologies. We are working to meet the requirements of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation, and we aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA.

What we have done

  • Keyboard access — the Site can be navigated using a keyboard alone, with a visible focus indicator.
  • Screen readers — pages use clear headings, landmarks, labelled links and buttons, and descriptive alternative text for meaningful images.
  • Colour and contrast — text and interactive elements are designed to meet WCAG AA contrast ratios, and information is never conveyed by colour alone.
  • Readable text — text can be resized up to 200% without loss of content, and the Site adapts to phones, tablets and desktop screens.
  • Accessibility toolbar — the accessibility button on every page lets you adjust text size, spacing, contrast, highlight links, pause animations and more.
  • Forms — all form fields have labels and clear error messages.
  • Reduced motion — the Site respects your device’s “reduce motion” setting and avoids unnecessary animation.
  • Language — key content is available in English and Somali.

Known limitations

We review the Site regularly, but some content may not yet fully meet our goals. Known areas we are working on include:

  • Some documents shared as PDF may not be fully accessible. If you need a document in an alternate format, contact us and we will provide it.
  • Some third-party services linked from or embedded in the Site (for example payment pages, video players or social media) are controlled by other organizations and may not meet the same standards.
  • Older photographs and event materials may have limited descriptions. We are adding descriptions as we review content.

Alternate formats and accommodations

We are happy to provide information on this Site in an alternate format or with communication supports on request, at no cost, and we will work with you to find a format that meets your needs. This includes large print, plain-language summaries, accessible electronic documents, or support over the phone or in person.

Feedback

Your feedback helps us improve. If you experience any barrier on this Site, have difficulty accessing content, or have suggestions, please let us know. We aim to respond to accessibility feedback within 5 business days.
